Abstract
This introduction offers a simple workable definition of stand-up comedy before examing how the form developed in the USA, the UK and Australia. It then looks at how in the last 30 years, stand-up has spread beyond anglophone countries thus becoming a global phenomenon. It finishes by outlining the structure of the book.
