Abstract
Hulked is a creative heritage and placemaking project inspired by the histories, stories and songs of the Thames Barges, many of which are now ‘hulked’ around the Thames Estuary.
It takes the form of a digital interactive archive and geolocated soundwalks which weave together stories, poems, songs and music inspired by the Thames Barges, curated with and by the local community and the project leads.
Created by writer and academic Jeremy Scott and sound artist, Anna Braithwaite, the soundwalks include contributions from students of Lower Halstow Primary School and members of the Oast House Community Choir and Thames Barge Community.
The live performances and showcases feature excerpts from the soundwalks performed live, including readings of creative writing, films, narratives, sound art and traditional music. This iteration formed part of the inaugural Whoop! Heritage festival at Slough Fort on the Hoo Peninsula, Medway, Kent. The festival was organised by the team at LV21 (Chatham).
