Abstract
This chapter considers the implications of the current context and future trends for the professional development of part-time teachers. It argues for an institution-wide holistic approach to the recruitment, initial and continuing professional development of these staff, responsive to the particular needs they may have while ensuring that they are, as far as practicable, integrated rather than isolated. Professional development thus needs to be context-sensitive, appropriate to teachers' current responsibilities and enabling them to develop the qualities and expertise to embark on a full academic career if they so wish.
