Abstract
This presentations consider the effects of policy on university language learning, chiefly in the UK but illustrated with examples from elsewhere. Successive government decisions about the study of languages in the primary and secondary school curricula, how language learning is funded and promoted (or not) in the post- compulsory sector and public perceptions of the value of Modern Foreign Language capability have all contributed to a shift in the location and purposes of language learning. This presentation draws on survey data to consider the implications for University Language Centres.
