Abstract
This review of an exhibition catalogue discusses the essential role of caricature in Picasso's art, focusing on the vitality of drawings and doodles in the sketchbooks underlying the otherwise static Blue Period and the contribution of caricature's distortions to the development of cubism, where essential and conceptual truth are achieved at the expense of figurative mimesis.
