Abstract
Older adult mistreatment (OAM), also known as elder abuse or older adult abuse, is a worldwide problem estimated to affect one in six adults aged 60 and older, with major consequences for victims and society. This chapter introduces the reader to the concept of OAM, focusing on the definition adopted by the World Health Organization and the characteristics of different types of OAM. We report prevalence estimates available in the literature and address international comparisons and gender differences. After providing a historical context for the study of OAM and explaining theoretical approaches, we present evidence-based risk and vulnerability factors that can be utilised in case management. Because OAM is under-reported, we address barriers to reporting and common intervention challenges in OAM cases and discuss the need for a victim-centred approach. Finally, we make recommendations for research that can help improve practice in the area. Within this chapter, a high-profile case is presented to illustrate that vulnerability to OAM is multifaceted.
