"Things to be seen": Spectacle and the performance of brand in contemporary fashion shows

Findlay, Rosie (2018) "Things to be seen": Spectacle and the performance of brand in contemporary fashion shows. About Performance, 14/15 . pp. 105-119. ISSN 1324-6089. (doi:10.3316/informit.323796532560462) (KAR id:91933)

Abstract

This article draws on John J. MacAloon's analysis of spectacle as a performance genre as well as the author's participant observation at two Australian Fashion Weeks to consider how fashion shows can be understood as spectacles. It critiques the importance of liveness and the mediation of the live alongside consideration of the primacy of "being there" and the ways the sensorily spectacular dimensions of fashion shows overlay the displayed collections with meaning.
