Abstract
The conflict between free and safe speech on university campuses cannot be resolved unless we inquire into the reasons making students perceive their university as a haven. I suggest that this is due to the social precarisation that capitalism has incurred in liberal democracies. Universities in such a context are called on to play a compensatory function -- the last safe haven against a pervading epidemic of precarity.
