Abstract
Comparing the electoral influence of the former main opposition party, the Japan Socialist Party (JSP) with the current Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) within the Japanese Diet. It argues that the DPJ's difficulty to define its policies until 2003 meant the party had less influence than the JSP.
