Abstract
Empathy is important for successful spectator engagement in fiction film. Empathy has three functions for the spectator: It fills in gaps in the narrative, enables the spectator to make predictions and thus creates suspense, and highlights what is of importance in a narrative needed to interpret the theme of the film.
