Abstract

Der Aufsatz behandelt das 1572 erschienene Epos Os Lusíadas (Die Lusiaden) des portugiesischen Dichters Luís de Camões, und darin speziell die Figur des Adamastor, eines gefallenen und als Strafe für sexuelle Übergriffe ins Kap der Guten Hoffnung verwandelten Titan. Adamastor ist ein von Camões erfundener Mythos, der über die Jahrhunderte als Sinnbild des afrikanischen Kontinents und seiner Bedeutung für Europäer gelesen wurde. In der zeitgenössischen südafrikanischen Literatur wurde der Mythos zuletzt von André Brink im Roman The First Life of Adamastor (1993) behandelt, der seinerseits zur Grundlage des Wandgemäldes T’kama-Adamastor (1999) von Cyril Coetzee wurde. Das Bild hängt heute im Lesesaal der Universität Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Brink und Coetzee setzen dem europäischen Mythos eine dezidiert afrikanische Sichtweise entgegen. Der Aufsatz untersucht beide Werke im Verhältnis zu den Lusiaden, ausgehend vom Bild der “Seevögel”, mit dem sowohl im Roman wie im Gemälde die portugiesischen Karacken gemeint sind, die Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts zum ersten Mal am Kap gesichtet werden.
