Abstract
This essay examines Picasso's 1913 cubist portrait of Apollinaire, designed as a frontispiece for his poetry collection 'Alcools'. Its paratextual function in relation to the book of poems is dicussed, as are its aesthetic qualities and its place in relation to other cubist portraits. The essay also includes a preparatory sketch for the portrait and a previously unpublished photograph of Apollinaire taken by Picasso. The essential relationship between photography, a Polynesian sculpture and the drawing is thus made apparent.
