Abstract
A discussion of Apollinaire's wartime correspondence, particularly a new edition of his letters to Madeleine Pagès, their value as literary works and as first-hand historical documents, showing how the 1952 edition of these letters was censored in order to promote a heroic image of the poet-soldier as part of Gaullist efforts to rebuild French morale after the Occupation, and how these efforts have negatively affected reception of Apollinaire's war poems.
