Abstract
Pompeii provides historians with the means to understand urbanism and its links to its hinterland. This chapter looks to the cultural memory of Pompeii's past located in texts and then moves on to examine the role of emulation, housing, and urban spectacle. In so doing, the site is set in the context of both its history and its landscape. The chapter emphasizes the role of both textual and archaeological sources as means to presenting an overview of the urban development of Pompeii.
