Abstract

This chapter discusses the teaching of Portuguese in English universities nowadays. It focuses on the context of Portuguese teaching, the interests that lead students to study the language, and some specificities of teaching/learning this language. It brings some examples of tasks performed by students in two universities to illustrate the configuration of Portuguese teaching in this context. The contribution of this study concerns showing the configuration of the teaching/learning and the place Portuguese occupies as a foreign language as being variables that differentiates it from others.
