Abstract
A mixed solution of CoCl2 and NiCl2 (with concentration of each cation equal to 0.5 M) enriched in Cl- up to a Cl-/cation atomic ratio of 7, has been examined by X-ray diffraction and EXAFS spectroscopy. The global information about the interactions of the two transition metals obtained by X-ray diffraction is in agreement with results obtained independently by EXAFS for cobalt and nickel. A stronger tendency of the Co2+ ion with respect to Ni2+ to form chloro complexes is seen by EXAFS.
