Abstract
Describes an experiment in which 480 undergraduates made decisions, either individually or in 4-person same-sex groups, about the attractiveness of a series of duplex bets. Attractiveness was closely related to the expected value of the bet. For both within- and between-condition comparisons, the average attractiveness decision of groups was higher than that for individuals when the expected value of the bet was positive, but was lower for bets with negative expected value; no significant shifts were observed when the expected value was equal to zero. In the various experimental conditions, the distribution of group decisions across the attractiveness scale was best described by a majority social decision scheme, and the accuracy of this model was independently supported by informal postsession questionnaire responses. A multiple regression analysis showed that groups weighted risk dimensions (win-loss probabilities and amounts) in toto more heavily than did individuals. These and other results are discussed in terms of social decision scheme theory.
