Moral reasoning amongst men with intellectual disabilities

Aims: The moral reasoning of men with intellectual disabilities (ID) was compared to men without intellectual disabilities.

Methods: This is the first study in a series, and within this study we examined the moral reasoning of men with ID who have no known history of criminal offending and compared the findings to men without ID.

Results: The Moral Theme Inventory, and the Sociomoral Reflection Measure (Short Form), as well as measures of intelligence, expressive vocabulary, socio-economic status, and social desirability were administered to participants across two time points. Comparisons were made between the two groups across time, and the sychometric properties of the instruments were examined.

Conclusions: There are benefits and drawbacks to using these methods to measure moral reasoning amongst men with ID. There are also implications for understanding

criminal offending by men with intellectual disabilities.
