Abstract
This chapter describes the design of radio over fiber transmission links for next generation distributed broadband wireless systems. The design challenges that these next generation wireless systems engender, such as wide radio channel bandwidth, multiple co-frequency radio channels and radio signals with high modulation complexity are described. An example radio over fiber transmission system architecture is proposed here which meets the requirements of the FUTON distributed broadband wireless system. The radio over fiber system design is validated by measurement of an experimental transmission link and wireless range is calculated from the measured link parameters.
