Abstract
This section provides an account of how the methodological framework for the project was developed and agreed. Following a first project phase during which national reports were produced by all participating teams (Leichsenring/ Alaszewski, 2004), the project's empirical phase had to face various challenges. The chapter will give a rationale for the research design and the plan of investigation, and provide an account of how challenges to methodological rigour were pre-empted, identified and tackled.
