Abstract

A discussion is given of the thermal, electronic, and magnetic properties of the gold cluster compound Au55(PPh3)12Cl6. These results are combined to form a consistent physical picture of the system. The coordination numbers of the individual gold sites in this cluster compound play an essential role. It is shown, making use of the results of new physical measurements as well as information from the physical and chemical literature, that the gold core of this cluster material already exhibits metallic bonding, while at the same time displaying some of the characteristics of a discrete energy level spectrum.
