Abstract
Over the past 20 years, large mortality trials have become an increasingly prominent feature of cardiovascular research. The numbers of patients enrolled in the trials has increased, and the quality of research has improved in line with recent methodological advances. This paper reviews important aspects of the design and analysis of key clinical studies and assesses the impact of the results of clinical trials on clinical practice.
