Abstract
A modular circuit for determining the leading one in a binary word is described. The circuit, which was principally designed for encoding binary data into a binary logarithm format, can also be used for floating paint normalisation. Its similarity to the Manchester carry adder can be exploited to provide fast 'look-ahead' or 'carry-skip' stages where necessary.
