Abstract
Conceptual, functional and technological issues in developing a Z39.50 system for researchers concerned with the Historic Environment were introduced at CAA 2001 (Austin et al, 2001). Development has moved on from the alpha version then available and a live version of the system, HEIRPORT, is now accessible at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/heirport/. One year on, this paper looks at how successful the portal has been in increasing access to resources and in improving the semantics of the search and retrieval of data. Future development work to improve the service is also considered.
