Abstract
Although Sulla is one of the pivotal figures in Roman history, it has proved surprisingly difficult to fix the date at which he relinquished his dictatorship. This paper surveys and weighs up the work of the last forty years on the subject. It then brings forward new evidence and fresh suggestions. The result is offered as a definitive treatment.
