Abstract
The first edition appeared at the end of 2000. The second edition contains discussion of Mein Jahrhundert and Im Krebsgang as well as other new material. It relates Grass’s recent prose both to his previous work and to the evolving domestic situation in Germany. Preece is the first critic in any language to react reflectively to Mein Jahrhundert and Im Krebsgang, arguing that the former is aesthetically more accomplished, even though Im Krebsgang received more attention on publication when it appeared in 2002. This second edition is soon to appear in Chinese. Preece is a member of the ‘Wissenschaftlicher Beirat der Günter Grass Stiftung’ and is regularly invited to speak on Grass
