Abstract
Academic success in Online Learning Environments (OLEs) depends on sustained effort, yet little is known about how initial motivation translates into engagement over time. In this paper we examine motivation, effort, and performance in a five-week online programme, focusing on the dynamics of a short-duration OLE. Study 1 identifies four key motivations for enrolling: novelty, flexibility, capability, and networking. Study 2 combines survey and behavioural data from active learners to show that willingness to invest effort mediates the relationship between learners' expectations and behavioural engagement, which positively affects performance. A robustness test shows that, when inactive learners are included, the effects of capability on willingness to invest effort and networking on behavioural engagement become insignificant. Study 3 analyses behavioural patterns throughout the course and demonstrates that both the amount and consistency of behavioural engagement are associated with better performance. Together, the findings suggest that initial expectations contribute to academic success primarily by fostering willingness to invest effort, while sustained and consistent engagement supports stronger learning outcomes. The study contributes to understanding learner behaviour in short-duration OLEs and highlights the importance of supporting students early to transform motivation into consistent effort and successful course completion.
