Abstract
Shona Illingworth's two screen video installation and works from her Amnesia Museum are included in the group exhibition, Brain(s)- Cervell(s) at Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, Spain.
The human brain is the most complex object we know and the one that generates the most questions, both scientifically and philosophically. Why do we have brains? Where does consciousness come from? And creativity? What happens when the mind becomes ill? Can intelligent machines be created?
The exhibition "Brain(s)" explores how art, science, and philosophy have represented this fascinating organ throughout history and delves into both the anatomy of the brain and everything it generates: consciousness, abstract thought, language, imagination, dreams, and memory. The exhibition also explores other minds beyond the human: artificial, animal, and collective intelligences, as well as those of organisms without brains.
An exhibition with nearly two hundred pieces, more than twenty contemporary artists, and nearly twenty scientific projects about this organ, which questions our understanding of conscious experience and explores what can happen when this experience is interrupted or degraded.
Curated by physicist and biologist Ricard Solé and Emily Sargent, curator of the Wellcome Collection, the exhibition presents immersive contemporary art installations, pieces from historical collections, and the results of scientific research projects combined with the perspectives of contemporary artists and also features historical material from Santiago Ramón y Cajal and René Descartes, inventions by visionary scientists, and projects from leading research institutes.
The exhibition, which will be free to the public from December 22, 2022, to June 25, 2023, on the fourth floor of the Espacio Fundación Telefónica, is also part of the Ramón y Cajal Year of Research 2022 program, promoted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
