Abstract

In this chapter, we start by positioning the role of occupational therapists and this approach to using arts-based interventions. Starting with what is meant by the term ‘occupation’, we then explore how occupational therapy has engaged with the use of arts and creative activities as a therapeutic intervention throughout the profession’s development. A case study section highlights the work that can be carried out within a variety of mental health settings, guided by occupational therapy theoretical concepts. The chapter ends with a selection of recent literature reviews that explore the use of occupational therapy and arts-based activities. These reviews highlight the emerging evidence-based practice in arts-based interventions for a range of clients across a variety of settings.
