Abstract
This interdisciplinary research project aims to investigate the symbiotic relationship between architecture and cinema through the application of Virtual Reality (VR) technology. The primary focus of this study is the renowned film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) by Robert Wiene, notable for its revolutionary narrative and architecturally innovative film sets. This research employs VR to digitally reconstruct the architecture (film sets) that have been lost, damaged beyond repair, and no longer physically exist. By utilising archival drawings and meticulous data processing, the project iteratively designs and creates digital models of the film sets with near-physical accuracy. The VR simulation that results from the proposed methodology provides a unique opportunity for scholars, architects, and film enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the Expressionist spatial and atmospheric environment. Ultimately, this research presents and advocates VR as a valuable tool for preserving and restoring cultural heritage within the realms of film and architecture, while also enhancing the understanding of abstract Expressionist architecture. The importance of this case study lies in its contribution to the preservation of film culture and to the architectural heritage of Expressionism.
