Abstract

This introductory chapter identifies the current entrepreneurial turn that museums are compelled to take. In today’s context of advanced neoliberalism, deregulation, privatisation and the retraction of public funding, museums find themselves in a precarious position between the public and the private spheres. While the participation of private capital in the production and access to culture is not unique to the twenty-first century, market logic is now pervasive in the cultural domain. This has been especially true in the last decade and since the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the use of digital platforms, resulted in revenue loss and the need for additional funding and changed the audiences’ needs. As culture becomes a financially lucrative market whereby heritage, knowledge and experience are turned into commodities, museums have to reconsider their practices and redefine their exploitable assets.

Entrepreneurship is multifaceted. The contents of this volume discuss case studies of entrepreneurial activities in mainly private and public art museums from different geopolitical and social contexts around the world (Europe, the United States, South America and China). They are arranged along three interrelated axes of analysis: private management of public museums, corporate sponsorship and architecture (Chapters 2–4); exhibition design, experience economy, colonial logic and the racialised spectacle (Chapters 5 and 6); and private versus community initiatives and social responsibility (Chapters 7 and 8). Through these multiple perspectives, this book hopes to lay bare the far-reaching implications of the entrepreneurial turn in the museum sector and to indicate ways in which to recover from it.
