Abstract

Maritime Animals is comprised of ten chapters, each of which focuses on the oceanic journeys of a particular species. This introduction provides a fuller picture of the involvement of a wide range of animals in the life of the ship by drawing on the accounts of animal passengers who came onboard during the Challenger expedition (1872–1876). It also gives an overview of the long history of maritime animal companionship, and several of the key themes and theoretical frameworks of the collection as a whole.
