Abstract

This chapter critically examines the prevailing approach to cultivating philanthropic citizenship among primary school aged children, proposing a paradigm shift from virtues orientated giving, towards participatory and justice-oriented practices. Drawing on extensive research, it underscores the significance of middle childhood in shaping civic behaviours. I argue that currently children are cultivated as philanthropic citizens predominantly through engagement in fundraising and charitable giving. In this chapter I critique this approach for its transactional nature, lack of critical engagement, and potential to exacerbate inequalities. I propose reframing discussions, adopting participatory and justice-oriented approaches, and ensuring equality of access, arguing for a comprehensive understanding of philanthropy beyond fundraising. In conclusion, the chapter advocates for a deeper, more meaningful approach to philanthropic citizenship in primary education, fostering active civic engagement, critical thinking, and social justice discussions among children.
