Abstract

Despite being common beneficiaries of philanthropy, children are frequently excluded from philanthropic dialogues and decision-making processes. This book advocates for a paradigm shift, asserting the critical importance of acknowledging and nurturing children's philanthropic citizenship. It contends that doing so is not just crucial but indispensable for fostering a more equitable and just society. The discourse on philanthropy, often caught in debates around power and privilege, needs a recalibration. The book posits that philanthropic behaviours should not be confined to personal sphere of benevolence but viewed through the lens of citizenship and collective action.

Drawing on a rich blend of academic research and practical experience, the author critically examines societal structures that shape children's understanding of philanthropy. The chapters delve into educational systems, community organisations, and cultural narratives that influence children's philanthropic behaviours. It underscores the need to move beyond traditional charity models, empowering children to question social injustices and engage in collective action, and challenges conventional notions of giving, urging a shift towards justice-oriented philanthropy.

‘Children as Change Makers’ calls for a reimagining of philanthropy as a form of participatory citizenship. It advocates for a philanthropic ecosystem framed by justice, solidarity, and collective action. This book serves as a roadmap for all stakeholders—from individuals to institutions—to empower children as agents of positive social change, fostering a kinder, more compassionate world for generations to come.
