Abstract
In seeking to understand why people engage in crime and violence, social scientists have pointed out the importance of studying the social relationships between young people, especially those who are in or associated with street gangs on 'on road'. The chapter outlines the philosophical aetiology of friendship before presenting the narratives of young people who, partly because of the friendships they forged when young, have been incarcerated for many years. By exploring the nuance of relationships ‘onroad’ this chapter provides a nuanced and sensitive understanding of the sociocultural conditions that preclude or encourage the formation of ‘good’ and or troublesome friendships
