Abstract
This chapter analyzes Nabokov's work between 1937 and 1948, when the writer was affected by a series of personal, literary and historical crises. It discusses the nature of these crises and examines their effects across a number of genres. It then identifies two recurrent motifs in Nabokov's work from this period: the labyrinthe or dead-end, and the dissolution of the artist into the work of art.
