Abstract
This chapter introduces the project of this edited collection, which takes a new approach to interdisciplinary legal research methods. The book investigates how scholars go about their work, while situating their practical choices within a wider context of conceptual and methodological meaning-making. Contributors were asked: if you were tasked with writing a hypothetical chapter on ‘the body’, where would you start? What would be your next steps, and why? Which literatures would you draw upon, and how would the process unfold given your choices? The chapter introduces the contributions, drawing out commonalities and differences in their chosen starting points; the ‘mess’, limitations and situatedness of research processes themselves; and their ‘end points’—goals, motivations, and what they hope to achieve. It concludes that interdisciplinary research involves choices around discipline and method that are deeply personal, and speak to the connectedness and inherently ethical nature of research practice.
