Abstract

Reveals the power of advanced structural methods in the context of contemporary materials research; this was, at the time, the most detailed study of the atomic-scale structure of a sol-gel glass undertaken. It remains a beacon and has been cited (e.g. in a review by AC Hannon) as an example of what can be achieved when a multidisciplinary approach is taken. In this case, the combination of careful chemistry with cutting-edge physical experimental methods.
