Abstract
One of the most amazing phenomena to hit post-War Britain, has been the meteoric rise of a myriad of youth subcultures, from the Teddy Boy to the Gabba-techno scene. The purpose of this study is to cast an analytical eye over the youth culture of the last twenty years, and its relationship to proceeding and subsequent sociological theory. Due to the vast array of youth subcultures, this study uses the punk movement and the rise of dance club cultures as its major examples, and hopes to highlight some of the significant changes which have occurred, and how these changes have forced sociologists to reconsider the very nature of subcultures. This study also critically examines the new theories which have recently surfaced in the field, and in conclusion takes a postmodernist stance to argue that the nature of subcultures has changed due to the extensive changes in wider society. This study is limited in taking on such a broad topic area, yet hopefully makes a contribution to the current debate.
