Abstract

‘South Park’ is an adult oriented cartoon which is at the forefront of youth cultural expression today. Twenty-eight episodes were analysed by using a combination of basic content analysis and an interpretation of some of the prevailing trends within its visual content and discourse, the purpose of which was to evaluate the ideology portrayed by the programme. In conclusion, the programme was seen to be mainly targeting a young male audience, and was found to be highly critical of virtually all aspects of American culture today, whilst affirming commonality between its viewers, with a shared appreciation for having grown up in a media saturated world.
