Abstract

In the field of spatial data handling, much research has focused on providing temporal support for GIS. It is clear that GIS could benefit greatly from the ability to store and maintain changes in data over time and some of the practical implications of this are outlined in this paper. This chapter first looks at different problems and solutions for incorporating temporal support in a practical manner, by describing the implementation of a land terrier system for a local authority using the relational model. It then considers how these temporal requirements may be met using an object-oriented approach, enabling the consideration of alternative strategies.
