Abstract

We report on a novel arrangement for a single-ended distributed fibre sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering, sensitive enough to quickly detect an unsafe level of temperature or strain applied on any 2 m section of a 25 km sensing fibre, The study also reveals the influence of self phase modulation, a major limiting factor for the probe pulse power.
