Abstract
Victim advocates in England and Wales provide vital support and information to people affected by crime. Advocates specifically working with victim/survivors
of violence against women and girls (VAWG) manage safeguarding, risk reduction, recovery processes, and criminal justice navigation in acute and ongoing
situations. An important aspect of VAWG support is the provision of tailored, wraparound care which empowers victim/survivors to rebuild their lives free from abuse, yet this is rarely reflected in advocates’ treatment, status, or remuneration. This chapter explores the value and impact of VAWG victim advocates, focusing on the strengths and limitations of being independent of the statutory sector; the need to adequately resource dedicated services for minoritised victims; and the growing concerns around commissioning, funding, and threats to sustainability. The conclusion highlights the unique contributions made by VAWG victim advocates while recommending an enhancement to their status and recognition.
