Unlocking Research Intelligence with OpenAlex and Repository Data

Badger, Ian (2026) Unlocking Research Intelligence with OpenAlex and Repository Data. [Conference item] (KAR id:116434)

Abstract

This poster describes the development of a research intelligence dashboard at the University of Kent using institutional repository metadata, OpenAlex, and Microsoft Power BI.

Research output data were exported from the University's repository and enhanced through automated workflows that retrieved citation, collaboration, authorship, and subject classification information from OpenAlex. The enriched dataset was then used to generate reports for Schools and REF Units of Assessment, alongside an interactive institutional dashboard.

The project was developed to improve access to bibliometric and research evaluation data across the institution. The dashboard enables exploration of publication activity, citation impact, open access performance, collaboration patterns, disciplinary strengths, and research trends through a series of interactive visualisations.

The poster will outline the workflow used to acquire, enrich, analyse, and visualise institutional research data, highlighting the opportunities offered by open bibliometric data sources. It will also discuss practical lessons learned during development, including data quality challenges, automation of reporting processes, and the use of Power BI to support research evaluation and strategic decision-making.

The approach provides a practical and reproducible model for institutions seeking to develop local research intelligence capabilities using open data and widely available tools.
