From barriers to bridges: community researchers as methodological innovators in health intervention evaluation

Gathering consistent and meaningful health intervention evaluation data from structurally disadvantaged communities presents significant challenges. Traditional external evaluation approaches often fail to capture authentic experiences due to linguistic barriers, cultural differences, and mistrust of formal systems. This study presents a systematic exploration of community researcher (CR) approaches across three diverse organisational contexts, examining what training, support, and skill development processes are necessary to ensure community researchers (CRs) can collect consistent and reliable evaluation data that meets both academic standards and authentically reflects community experiences and organisational needs. Through implementation assessment of four cases and stakeholder interviews with three organisations serving immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers,young offenders, and residents of socioeconomically deprived social housing estates, we demonstrate how different CR approaches address specific population challenges. Our findings reveal that CRs can enhance data authenticity through cultural competence and established trust relationships, although implementation requirements vary significantly across communities. The study provides an implementation model for embedding CR approaches within existing service delivery models, offering sustainable solutions for organisations requiring rigorous evaluation data without imposing additional burden on limited resources.
