Abstract

The attached paper, “Diversification of the Nigerian Economy as a De-carbonisation Pathway: Opportunities and Challenges,” was produced as a written output following participation in the online Symposium on Law and Policy, and the Promotion of Investment in the Renewable-Energy Sector. The symposium, convened by Avidan Kent and Pedi Obani, was co-hosted by Afronomicslaw and International Law@UEA and examined the legal and policy conditions necessary for attracting foreign direct investment into the renewable energy sector, with particular attention to Nigeria. Building on the symposium’s focus, the paper explores Nigeria’s use of Green Bonds as an innovative policy tool for financing sustainable development projects, promoting economic diversification, and supporting the transition towards a lower-carbon economy. It situates the discussion within Nigeria’s broader economic reform agenda and considers both the opportunities and challenges of using green finance as part of a decarbonisation pathway.
