Abstract

Introduction: This qualitative research study explores the impact of the ROCKET project (Reading for Older people, Connecting with Kids and Enjoying time Together), an intergenerational reading initiative inviting volunteers aged over 65 to join an established volunteer reading scheme within a primary school in Kent, UK. The aim was to assess the experiences of participants and the impact on children.

Methods: A qualitative approach was used, involving semi-structured interviews with three volunteers and four teachers who shared expert views on the wide-ranging impact for children in their class.

Results: Thematic analysis identified six overarching themes: improved reading ability, children’s social development, reduced social isolation, volunteers’ sense of purpose/enjoyment and the future potential of ROCKET and challenges to overcome

Discussion: Intergenerational projects have the potential to bridge generational gaps, reduce social isolation and improve literacy. Utilising existing resources allows for scalable expansion of such projects benefiting both volunteers and children involved.
