Abstract

The ASCOT (Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit) is a commonly used measure of care-related quality of life. Some older adults, who use social care, may find it difficult to complete the ASCOT, for example due to cognitive impairment (including dementia) or physical and sensory problems associated with very old age.

An easy-read version of the ASCOT (ASCOT-ER) was previously developed for people with autism and learning disabilities to be able to self-report their quality of life, however, this version was not designed to be used by older adults, especially those living with dementia. The aim of this project is to develop an easy-read version of the ASCOT that is appropriate for use by older adults using social care.

A co-production group of eight older social care users and their informal caregivers has met three times to evaluate the comprehensibility, wording and layout of the established ASCOT-ER, and how these relate to the needs of older adults accessing social care.

Between March and October 2023, the changes made by the co-production group will be tested in three rounds of cognitive interviews, with up to 30 older social care users (7-10 people per round) in London and the South East of England. Participants will all be people who struggle to self-complete conventional surveys. The interviews will establish the content validity of the revised tool and whether people need additional support to understand and self-report.

This paper will present changes made by the co-production group and early findings from the cognitive interviews.
