Abstract

This essay highlights the diffuse, subtle and insidious presence of references to gas warfare in Apollinaire's war poetry, concentrating on the infantry poem 'Océan de terre'. These references have been as invisible to critics as gas itself could be on the battlefield, and this has impoverished understanding and appreciation of the poems.
