Abstract

Elin examines presence of the former Greenwich District Hospital in the personal and collective imaginings, memories and narratives of women in the surrounding area in the lead up to its demolition to make way for commercial development in 2006. Built in 1969-72 the hospital’s modernist architecture was celebrated for its highly rationalised approach to hospital design. In the film the voices of women from the nearby Flamsted Housing Estate haunt this institutional space with recollections of childbirth and intimate memories of their first physical contact with their newborn babies, as the camera tracks through the deserted corridors, operating theatres in disembodied motion. Elin raises questions of agency and voice. It explores the cultural and social impact of the hidden narratives of a gendered emotional landscape contained within a modernist social project, giving way to the corporate processes of commercial redevelopment.
